Biodiversity Conservation and Assessment

Prof. P. Das  worked on biodiversity conservation and assessment of tropical plants over 50 years. As the founding Director, he established Regional Plant Resource Centre at Bhubaneswar, India, a botanic garden and a research institute over 191.73ha acres of waste land for conservation and assessment of plant resources of Odisha with emphasis on conservation, documentation, genetic diversity assessment using molecular tools, plant adaptation to abiotic stress and cloning for perpetuation of rare, endangered and threatened species; over 3250 species of plants were conserved. As the first project Director, he established Biju Patnaik Medicinal Plants Garden & Research Institute at Jeypore, Koraput, India for conservation of medicinal plants used by 62 primitive tribes of Odisha.

        Besides ex-situ conservation initiatives at the Regional Plant Resource Centre, Bhubaneswar, he established Sub-Centres at different agro-climatic zones of Odisha state to conserve diverse plant genetic resources through habitat protection; 514 wild species were conserved and documented at  Sanaghagara sub-centre spreading over 488ha in Keonjhar district.

Conservation of Odisha Mangroves

Professor P. Das made significant research contributions on Odisha mangroves. Floristic survey of true mangroves and their associates. Standardization of vegetative propagation under mist and fog, biochemical changes during rooting of cuttings and chromosome number, morphology and nuclear DNA content in mangroves were reported. Impact of mining and industrial activities on mangroves were reported. Prof. Das established Mangrove Research Centre at Paradeep, Odisha and raised plantation with different mangrove species on 27.56ha of degraded mangrove habitat .

Physico-chemical properties of mine wastes in over burdens; uptake and accumulation of heavy metals by different plant species and other associated environmental problems were studied by Das and his associates. Large scale experimental plantation of trees, shrubs, climbers and herbs were taken up on mine over burdens of lead, coal, iron, manganese and chromite to find out limiting factors for growth and development for possible application of the research findings in reclamation and re-vegetation programs on mine wastes. Effects of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, Hg, Zn, Ag, Mn, Fe, Mo)  on growth and development of crop plants were reported. In vitro methods for induction of metal tolerance in a number of crop plants and weeds were employed for re-vegetation on the waste dumps.

Wasteland Development

Large scale deforestation, various inappropriate land use practices, change in rainfall patterns, flood, unscientific irrigation practices with impacts of climate change have hastened the rate of land degradation. Human activities in many countries have exposed huge land areas to degradation, drought and desertification. There is an urgent need to halt the process of degradation and desertification to bring back to the earlier state of soil health and productivity. P. Das worked on wasteland development through plantation of large number of tree species including leguminous species to improve soil nutrition, check soil erosion, conserve soil moisture and improve productivity. Trees were inoculated with microbes at nursery stage for root ramification and nitrogen fixation to improve field establishment and better growth, development and productivity.

Biodiesel/ Biofuel from non-edible oils

To meet the ever burgeoning energy needs in a sustainable manner, various possibilities pertaining to potential feed stocks from vegetable sources that give clean fuels are being investigated. Use of edible oils as biodiesel feed-stock in India is not encouraged as it competes with food and feed. Increasing efforts for new and efficient sources of feedstock of non-edible oils for biodiesel/ biofuels are given priority for alternative and sustainable feed-stocks like non-edible oils, as mixed feed-stocks. Cheap non-edible renewable sources of oil are gaining global importance for biofuel production for economic reason and appears to be more viable option.

Professor P. Das and his team reported many new resources of vegetative oil for use as biofuel/ biodiesel which are reportedly more efficient and less energy demanding.
