Prof. P. Das was born in Madhuraganda Khamar on 6th November 1942, a remote village in Odisha under Patkura P. S. of Kendrapara district. He  was educated at Bun Behari High School, Kujang, Odisha, 1955-61; College of Agriculture, Odisha, 1961-65; Calcutta University1966-68, BCKV 1976-79, WestBengal; Utkal University, Odisha; BSc 1965; MSc. 1968. PhD. 1980; DSc 2012.

Prof. Das established and nurtured Regional Plant Resource Centre (RPRC), a Botanic Garden and Research Institute at Bhubaneswar for ex situ  and at Sanghagara, Keonjhar for in situ conservation of diverse plant species. He established Biju Patnaik Medicinal plants garden and research institute for conservation  and study of medicinal plants used by tribal communities in Koraput region of Odisha. He established Mangrove research centre for conservation and study of Odisha mangroves.  For development  of  waste and degraded lands, overburdens of coal, iron, manganese and chromite  mines,  he used large number of tree species  to study their establishment, growth and development for environmental protection.

He founded The Science Foundation for Tribal and Rural Resource Development (SFTRRD), a not for profit Trust  for R & D and academic activities recognised by Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt of India.

            The Science Foundation for Tribal and Rural Resource Development, has its Registered Office and Laboratories at C-122 (HIG), Odisha State Housing Board Colony, Baramunda, Bhubaneswar-751003 in Khurda district and Field Laboratories and Botanic Gardens at Karlapat and Semiliguda in Kalahandi and Koraput districts of Odisha respectively. Major thrust areas of Research are on conservation, documentation and characterization of plant genetic resources and sustainable use of natural resources to enhance livelihoods and food security in tribal & rural areas.

            The Science Foundation has Plant Molecular Biology Laboratory; Cell, Tissue culture Laboratory; Cytogenetics Laboratory; Microbiology Laboratory; Phyto-chemistry Laboratory; Clean Energy Laboratory, Natural Products Laboratory and Soil, Water Laboratory with basic instrumentation facilities to undertake R & D work on survey, documentation and characterization of natural resources; utilization to enhance livelihoods through innovative technologies. Besides, library, net-communication and other required facilities are available to support research and allied activities.
